My beautiful cat, Toshi, died last Saturday afternoon after a chronic kidney condition that was kept in check with special food, medication, and love…until it wasn’t. He went quickly. On Wednesday he looked fine; on Thursday, he seemed a little sluggish, so I took him to the doctor to get checked out. He went downhill from there. We put him to sleep on Saturday afternoon. The hardest part was leaving him behind, sprawled on his side on the examining table, still warm, his eyes slightly open and the color draining out of his orange nose. (I loved that nose!) I worried some part of him could still see me, even though the vet had stopped his heart and declared him dead 10 minutes earlier. I didn’t want him to watch me walk away.
